** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lough Bofin, a freshwater lake on the River Shannon between Counties Roscommon and Leitrim, offers a tranquil lakeside setting with modest recreational appeal. Because the lake is linked to the Shannon-system and influenced by river flows and seasonal weather, water temperatures remain relatively cool. In winter the surface water is likely to lie around 4–6 °C (39–43 °F), while in summer it may warm to about 15–18 °C (59–64 °F). On rare calm, sunny days shallow bays might briefly reach around 19 °C (66 °F), but the open waters generally stay cooler owing to currents and depth. The best time for more comfortable swimming would be from late June to early September, when air and water temperatures are at their mildest.
Swimming in Lough Bofin is permitted in principle, but it is not a formally designated bathing area and conditions mean swimmers should proceed with caution. Access points around the lake are more geared to boating and fishing—indeed the lake is well known for species such as pike, roach and bream. Because of possible boat traffic, changing weather and variable underwater terrain, swimmers are advised to stick to shallower shore-entry spots and ideally use wetsuits outside the warmest weeks. Nearby the harbour town of Dromod provides lakeside amenities, while the broader Shannon region offers scenic drives, historic villages and woodland walks—making Lough Bofin a quiet yet appealing choice for those comfortable with open-water conditions.
