*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Kitchi Lake in Minnesota follows the seasonal temperature patterns typical of northern lakes. In spring the water is cold, often ranging from about 40–60°F (4–15°C) as ice melts and the lake mixes. By summer surface temperatures commonly warm to roughly 65–78°F (18–26°C) in the shallows on sunny days, with deeper water remaining cooler. In early fall the lake cools again to around 45–60°F (7–16°C). During winter the surface freezes and is at the freezing point of 32°F (0°C); water immediately beneath the ice tends toward the density maximum near 39°F (4°C) in deeper layers, creating a cold but relatively stable environment under ice cover.
Swimming at Kitchi Lake is possible and is generally practiced in the warmer months where public access or shoreline permission exists, but conditions control whether it is advisable. Summer surface temperatures often are comfortable for swimming, while spring and fall waters can feel shockingly cold and increase risk of cold-water incapacitation. Winter open-water swimming is hazardous without specialized training and safety measures; ice safety is a distinct concern if entering or traveling on the frozen lake. Local water-quality advisories, aquatic vegetation, private property boundaries, and posted rules should be checked before swimming.
