** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Natoma is a narrow, riverine reservoir fed by the American River, so its water temperatures tend to reflect seasonal river flows rather than deep-lake thermal stratification. In winter (December–February) surface temperatures commonly sit around 45–55°F (7–13°C). Spring (March–May) temperatures typically warm into the 50–65°F range (10–18°C) as inflows moderate and air temperatures rise. In summer (June–August) the lake can reach about 65–75°F (18–24°C) at the surface on warmer days, though cooler pockets remain near inflows and shaded areas. During fall (September–November) temperatures generally drop back into the 55–70°F band (13–21°C). Actual readings vary with recent rainfall, releases from upstream dams, and daily weather.
Swimming in Lake Natoma is not generally promoted; park rules and operational considerations mean that swimming is restricted or discouraged in many areas. The lake is heavily used for rowing, kayaking, and motorized boating, creating safety conflicts, and water releases can cause strong currents. For these safety and management reasons, official recreation focuses on paddlesports and fishing rather than widespread public swimming, and visitors should follow posted regulations and advisories before entering the water.
