Rollins Reservoir, a Sierra Nevada foothills impoundment in California, can be quite cool even in summer. Surface temperatures in the warmest months often reach roughly 60–75°F (15–24°C) during mid-to-late summer at shallow, sun-exposed spots, but deeper water remains much colder. In spring and fall the surface typically ranges from about 45–60°F (7–15°C), and in winter it can drop to roughly 35–45°F (2–7°C) or approach near-freezing as ice and snow influence inflows. Because reservoirs stratify, thermocline layers and deep water can be substantially colder than surface readings, so temperature can change quickly when moving from shallows to deeper water.
Swimming is generally permitted at Rollins Reservoir and is a common summer activity in designated day-use areas, but there are practical restrictions and safety considerations.
