** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Folsom Lake’s water temperature changes strongly with the seasons and with depth and location in the reservoir. Surface temperatures in winter commonly fall into the mid-40s to mid-50s °F (about 7–13 °C). In spring the lake is often chilly from runoff, roughly 50–65 °F (10–18 °C). Summer surface readings typically rise into the mid-60s to upper-70s °F (about 18–26 °C) and can occasionally reach the low 80s °F (around 27–28 °C) during heat waves; deeper water remains noticeably cooler year-round. By fall the surface cools back toward the 60–70 °F range (16–21 °C) as air temperatures drop and inflows change.
Swimming is permitted in many parts of Folsom Lake, but local rules and signage can restrict access near marinas, dams or launch areas for safety reasons. Even where swimming is allowed, users should be aware of hazards: cold or variable temperatures that can cause cold-water shock, sudden drop-offs, submerged debris, strong currents near inlets, and boat traffic. Lifeguards are not present at most sites, and water quality or algae advisories may occasionally be issued. For safety, swim in designated beach areas when available, avoid lone swimming, and consider flotation devices if conditions or temperature are a concern.
