Lacul Morii (Lacul Morii) is a large artificial reservoir on the western edge of Bucharest in the Ilfov county area, used mainly for flood control and recreation. Water temperatures follow a typical temperate continental pattern: in winter the surface often falls to around 0–4 °C (32–39 °F) and can ice over in cold years; spring sees a gradual rise to roughly 6–15 °C (43–59 °F); summer surface temperatures commonly range between about 18–26 °C (64–79 °F) depending on weather and depth; and autumn usually brings cooling to around 10–16 °C (50–61 °F). Local temperature at swimming depth can lag behind air temperature and will vary with wind, sun exposure and inflows.
Swimming at Lacul Morii is not officially sanctioned as a managed bathing area, and authorities generally discourage it. Reasons include variable water quality influenced by urban runoff, a lack of lifeguards and safety infrastructure, boat and recreational traffic, and hidden hazards such as sudden depth changes and submerged objects. Despite this, people do sometimes bathe informally in the warmer months; such activity remains at each individual’s risk and can be restricted seasonally or locally by municipal regulations and signage. For safe swimming, using designated, monitored beaches elsewhere is recommended.
