Lake Kiantajärvi, located in North Ostrobothnia near the town of Suomussalmi, is a large and deep lake surrounded by forested hills and peaceful wilderness. It is part of the Oulujoki river basin and known for its clear, pure water. Because of its northern location and considerable depth, the water temperature in Kiantajärvi remains relatively cool throughout the year. In spring, after the ice melts in May, the surface temperature is typically around 4–7 °C (39–45 °F). During early summer, it rises to 13–16 °C (55–61 °F), and in July, the warmest month, the lake usually reaches 17–20 °C (63–68 °F). In sheltered bays, the temperature can occasionally reach 21–22 °C (70–72 °F). By late September, the water cools below 10 °C (50 °F), and Kiantajärvi generally freezes again in November.
