Nuasjärvi, a medium-sized lake in the Kainuu region, is a significant feature near the town of Sotkamo, offering excellent recreational value. Swimming is fully permitted across its accessible shorelines throughout the open-water period, thanks to the Finnish legal framework of Everyman’s Rights. The proximity of the lake to popular areas like the Vuokatti resort ensures there are maintained public beaches and easily accessible spots for bathing, complemented by the generally clean water quality typical of Finnish northern lakes.
The water temperature in Nuasjärvi is severely constrained by the long, cold winters in Kainuu. The lake is generally frozen from December to April, with the water under the ice remaining at the cold 0∘C to 4∘C range. The window for genuinely comfortable swimming is narrow, primarily limited to the warmest weeks of July and early August. During this peak time, the surface temperature typically rises to 16∘C to 21∘C. Outside of this short season, the water is too cold for casual use, primarily attracting experienced individuals who practice cold-water swimming or a quick refreshing dip.
