Location & Local Information
Lake Hyrynjärvi, located in the Kainuu region of eastern Finland near the town of Hyrynsalmi, is a large and clear freshwater lake surrounded by forests and gentle hills. Its temperature follows the typical pattern of northern Finnish lakes, with cold, clean water that warms slowly in summer. In spring, after the ice melts, the surface temperature is about 4–7 °C (39–45 °F). During early summer, it gradually rises to 14–17 °C (57–63 °F), and in July, it usually reaches 18–21 °C (64–70 °F). On warm days, shallow areas near the shore may briefly reach 22–23 °C (72–73 °F). By autumn, the water cools quickly below 10 °C (50 °F), and the lake usually freezes in November.
Swimming in Lake Hyrynjärvi is allowed and common during the short northern summer. The water is exceptionally clean, and there are several small beaches and piers near Hyrynsalmi where locals and visitors swim. Although the water tends to stay cool even in midsummer, it offers refreshing conditions for open-water swimming and recreation.
