Lake Iso-Kiimanen, a significant lake in the Kainuu region, is a popular destination for water activities, including swimming. Swimming is permitted throughout the open-water season due to Finland’s Everyman’s Rights, which guarantees free public access to waterways for recreation, provided the beautiful natural environment and private properties are respected. Located in the municipality of Sotkamo, the lake is known for its relatively clear waters and offers multiple access points along its extensive shoreline for both casual dips and dedicated swimming.
The water temperature of Iso-Kiimanen is heavily dictated by its northern location and annual cycle. The lake is typically frozen from November through April, with the water under the ice remaining at a consistently cold 0∘C to 4∘C.
