Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Kaukuanjärvi, located in northern Lapland near the municipality of Sodankylä, is a small and peaceful lake surrounded by forests and open wilderness. Because of its high-latitude position, the lake remains cold for most of the year, with ice covering it from late autumn until late May or early June. In spring, right after the ice melts, the surface temperature is around 3–6 °C (37–43 °F). During early summer, the water warms to about 12–15 °C (54–59 °F), and in July, it typically reaches 17–19 °C (63–66 °F). On particularly hot days, shallow areas may briefly reach 20–21 °C (68–70 °F). By September, the temperature drops below 10 °C (50 °F), and freezing begins again toward the end of October.
Swimming in Lake Kaukuanjärvi is allowed and offers a refreshing experience typical of Lapland’s natural lakes. The water is exceptionally clean and clear, but due to the cool climate, swimming is mainly possible in July and early August. Locals and visitors sometimes swim from small sandy shores or wooden piers, enjoying the quiet surroundings and unspoiled nature. Although the water is rarely warm, its purity and tranquility create an authentic northern swimming experience.
