Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information

The Great Salt Lake, located in northern Utah, is the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere and one of the most distinctive natural features in the United States. Its water temperature changes noticeably throughout the year, influenced by air temperature, depth variations, and high salinity. In winter, surface temperatures typically range between 2–6 °C (36–43 °F), and the water feels extremely cold. During spring, as air temperatures rise, the lake gradually warms to 10–18 °C (50–64 °F). By midsummer, the shallow areas near the shore can reach 22–27 °C (72–81 °F), while deeper or more central parts remain cooler. In autumn, the water cools again to around 12–17 °C (54–63 °F) as the weather changes.

Swimming in the Great Salt Lake is permitted and often considered a unique experience due to its exceptionally high salt content, which allows swimmers to float effortlessly. The best time to swim is from late June through early September, when the water is warmest and air temperatures are comfortable. However, the high salinity can cause skin irritation for some people, and the presence of brine flies and a strong natural odor can make swimming less appealing. Despite these factors, the lake remains a fascinating destination for visitors interested in nature and geology.
