** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Newton Reservoir in northern Utah experiences a wide seasonal swing in surface temperatures. In spring the water commonly runs cold, roughly 40–55°F (4–13°C) as snowmelt and runoff dominate, while summer surface temperatures can warm to about 60–75°F (16–24°C) on sunny days. In autumn the reservoir typically cools again to near 45–60°F (7–16°C), and in winter the surface may approach freezing, about 32–39°F (0–4°C) with ice forming in sustained cold periods. These ranges depend on air temperature, wind, depth, and inflows; deeper or shaded parts stay colder year-round and abrupt weather changes can lower temperatures quickly.
Swimming is not actively promoted at Newton Reservoir because it is a managed irrigation and recreational water body with no staffed beaches or lifeguards, fluctuating water levels, and potential hazards such as cold shock, sudden drop-offs near inlets and outlets, and variable water quality. Recreational swimming is often allowed in principle on many Utah reservoirs, but visitors should confirm local regulations, be prepared for cold water even on warm days, and exercise caution because the site lacks formal swimming infrastructure and emergency supervision.
