Errwood Reservoir, tucked in the Goyt Valley of Derbyshire, stays cold for most of the year. Surface temperatures typically sit around 3–6 °C (37–43 °F) in winter, rise to roughly 5–10 °C (41–50 °F) in spring, and can reach about 10–16 °C (50–61 °F) on the warmest summer days before falling back to 6–10 °C (43–50 °F) in autumn. Because it is an upland reservoir with deep water and limited sun exposure, even summer swims feel chilly and layers of colder water can be present beneath the surface.
There is no designated, lifeguarded bathing area at Errwood and reservoir managers do not formally promote swimming; some people do wild swim there, but it carries risks from cold shock, underwater hazards and variable currents, so caution is advised. Visitors often come instead for walking and wildlife watching; nearby attractions include the ruins and surrounding gardens of Errwood Hall, the scenic Goyt Valley, adjacent Fernilee Reservoir and numerous Peak District trails for hiking and cycling.
