Bosley Reservoir in Cheshire sits above the village of Bosley and feeds the Macclesfield Canal. Water temperatures follow the typical temperate British pattern: in summer the surface commonly warms to around 15–20 °C (59–68 °F), with occasional warm spells pushing it a little higher. In spring and autumn the reservoir is usually cooler, roughly 5–12 °C (41–54 °F), while in winter temperatures commonly fall to near 0–6 °C (32–43 °F) and can be especially cold below the surface. Thermal layering and seasonal runoff mean temperatures can vary quickly with depth and weather.
Swimming is generally discouraged at Bosley Reservoir and similar inland reservoirs because of cold water, hidden currents, steep or slippery banks and the lack of lifeguards; access may also be restricted by the landowner or water manager. Some people do undertake wild swimming at their own risk, but it is not an officially promoted activity. Visitors can instead enjoy nearby attractions such as the Bosley Locks and towpath of the Macclesfield Canal, local walking routes including Tegg’s Nose Country Park and scenic paths into the western Peak District.
