** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
#Cumbria
Bassenthwaite Lake in Cumbria is a relatively shallow, exposed waterbody, so surface temperatures vary noticeably through the year. In winter the lake typically chills to around 1–6 °C (34–43 °F), spring often brings 4–12 °C (39–54 °F), summer surface temperatures commonly reach 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) on warmer spells, and autumn cools back toward 6–12 °C (43–54 °F). These are approximate surface readings; deeper or shaded areas stay colder and weather can change conditions quickly. Cold water shock and rapid temperature changes are real risks even in summer.
Wild swimming is commonly practiced here but there are no formal supervised swimming areas, so it is allowed in the sense that people do swim, not because of organised provision. Swimmers need to take care because of low temperatures, occasional boat traffic and areas of ecological sensitivity around the lake; some shorelines are managed for birds and other wildlife, so local guidance or signage should be checked. Nearby attractions include the market town of Keswick, the Skiddaw fells, Whinlatter Forest Park and other Lake District walks and lakes, offering plenty to do before or after a swim.
