*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information

Chapelhouse Reservoir, high in the northern Lake District near Caldbeck, tends to be cool year-round because of its upland setting. Typical surface temperatures range from about 0–4 °C (32–39 °F) in winter, rising to roughly 4–10 °C (39–50 °F) in spring. In summer the water rarely gets warm, commonly sitting around 12–16 °C (54–61 °F), and autumn usually brings a drop back to roughly 6–10 °C (43–50 °F). Weather, depth and inflows mean temperatures can vary quickly, and surface values don’t reflect colder conditions below.
Swimming at Chapelhouse is generally discouraged or subject to restrictions because it serves as a water supply reservoir and can have hidden hazards, cold shock risk and variable currents. Some people do wild-swim at their own risk where local rules allow, but it’s important to obey signage and landowner guidance. The area offers plenty of alternatives for visitors, including walks on the Caldbeck Fells, birdwatching around nearby Bassenthwaite and easy access to other Lake District sites such as Derwentwater and Keswick.
