** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Crummock Water is a deep, glacial lake in the Western Lake District and its surface temperatures are generally cool year-round. Typical seasonal ranges run from around 2–6 °C (36–43 °F) in winter, rising to roughly 4–10 °C (39–50 °F) in spring. In the warmest part of summer the surface can reach about 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) on sunny days, while autumn usually sees temperatures fall back to about 6–12 °C (43–54 °F). Deeper water remains considerably colder than the surface, and conditions change quickly with weather and wind.
Swimming in Crummock Water is possible and commonly practised by experienced wild swimmers, but there are no formal bathing facilities or lifeguards and access points can be steep or rocky. Cold-water shock and underwater hazards make caution essential, so many people wear wetsuits, swim with companions, and use visible markers. The lake sits close to the village of Buttermere and is a short walk from neighbouring Loweswater; popular nearby attractions include fell walks up Grasmoor and Mellbreak and scenic routes through Honister and the Buttermere valley.
