** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Hayeswater is an upland lake in the Lake District whose water remains cool year‑round. In summer the surface may warm to roughly 10–18 °C (50–64 °F) on the warmest days, while spring and autumn typical ranges are about 4–10 °C (39–50 °F). In winter temperatures often fall close to freezing, around 0–4 °C (32–39 °F), and ice can form in cold spells. Because the reservoir sits fairly high and is shaded by surrounding fells, temperatures are noticeably lower than in lowland lakes.
Swimming here is practised by some wild swimmers but it is not a supervised or managed bathing site. There are no lifeguards, changing facilities or formal safety checks, and the cold, deep water, steep banks and submerged hazards make it potentially risky; swimmers should be experienced in cold-water swimming, use appropriate precautions and never go alone. The area is otherwise attractive for walkers — nearby features include the villages of Hartsop and Patterdale, the shoreline of Ullswater and routes up towards Helvellyn and other classic fells.
