** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information

Chornobyl is located in the northern part of Kyiv Oblast, within the zone where the Pripyat River flows into the Kyiv Reservoir. The area is characterized by numerous water bodies — rivers, floodplain lakes, and cooling ponds that once served the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. In summer, the water temperatures in these places are similar to other parts of northern Ukraine: around 20–23°C in June and up to 25°C in July during warm spells. The rivers and lakes here are calm and shallow in many spots, allowing the water to heat up well under the sun.

However, despite the pleasant summer conditions, swimming in this region is officially prohibited due to radioactive contamination that remains in the environment. The water and sediments in some ponds and sections of the Pripyat may still contain traces of radionuclides. As a result, the lakes and rivers around Chornobyl are used only for scientific monitoring, not for recreation. The landscape remains picturesque — with quiet waters and lush vegetation — but contact with the water is strongly discouraged.
