Hostomel lies along the Irpin River, just northwest of Kyiv, where the river forms gentle bends and flows through green floodplain meadows. In this area, the Irpin is relatively calm and shallow, so during the summer months the water warms up well — by mid-June it often reaches 22–24°C, and in July and August can rise to around 25–26°C. The slow current and sandy or muddy riverbanks make the river suitable for swimming in certain spots, especially where locals have cleared access to the water.
Residents of Hostomel and nearby towns often come to the river for relaxation, picnics, and a quick swim during hot weather. The water quality is generally acceptable for recreational use, especially upstream of the denser urban zones.
