** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information

The city district of Stari Grad (Old Town) in Serbia does not border the Miljacka River; the Miljacka is instead the central river of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, where a district also bears the name Stari Grad. The river, particularly where it flows through the urban area, is historically known for having very poor water quality and low discharge. For this reason, swimming in the Miljacka is generally not permitted and highly discouraged due to health risks from pollution, particularly in the city centre. The river is valued for its historic bridges and scenic urban setting, not for bathing.

As a relatively shallow and slow-moving river through the city, the Miljacka’s temperature fluctuates with the seasons. In the winter months, from approximately December to February, the river water is extremely cold, often near freezing, ranging from 0∘C to 5∘C. In the peak of summer, specifically July and August, the surface water can warm up more than mountain rivers, reaching temperatures between 17∘C and 20∘C. However, this warming does not negate the water quality issues, which are the main barrier to swimming.

Is it possible to swim in Stari Grad (Serbia) in Miljacka and what are the possibilities for this?
If you mean the Miljacka that runs through Stari Grad in Sarajevo (which is in Bosnia and Herzegovina, not Serbia), swimming is generally not recommended because the river is shallow and can have water-quality and safety issues, so while locals sometimes wade or take brief dips at calm stretches in summer and occasional organized events occur, proper bathing is best done at monitored pools or officially approved natural sites.
