Location & Local Information
Smederevo is a major port city on the Danube River (Dunav) in Serbia, and the river is the focal point of its identity. Swimming in the Danube is popular, particularly at the officially managed city beach or local bathing spots, although the large volume of the river, the presence of commercial shipping traffic, and strong currents in the main channel mean swimming is only truly safe and recommended in designated, supervised, and protected shallow areas. Water quality is regularly monitored in these specific locations during the summer season.
As one of Europe's largest rivers, the Danube's temperature near Smederevo displays a wide seasonal range. In the winter months, from approximately December to March, the water is consistently very cold, generally ranging from 1∘C to 6∘C, with the risk of ice formation in exceptionally cold weather. Comfortable swimming temperatures only occur in the height of summer, typically July and August. During this peak period, the surface temperature can rise significantly, reaching a pleasant range of 23∘C to 25∘C, which is similar to the Adriatic Sea.
