Šabac is a city in western Serbia situated on the right bank of the Sava River, a major waterway in the region. Swimming in the Sava near Šabac is a long-standing tradition, primarily focused on the city beach areas. While swimming is generally allowed and encouraged in these specific designated and maintained locations during the summer, the main river channel is active with shipping traffic and has strong currents, making swimming outside of monitored zones unsafe and ill-advised. Water quality is monitored to ensure it meets health standards for recreational use.
The water temperature of the Sava River near Šabac follows a broad continental pattern. In the cold winter months, from approximately December to March, the temperature drops significantly, typically ranging from 0∘C to 5∘C, sometimes causing ice formation, which makes swimming impossible. The river warms up slowly in spring, reaching comfortable levels only in the height of summer, July and August.
