❌ As of today, the minimum water temperature ranges from 50°F (10°C) to 54°F (12°C). The water is slightly warmer, but still cool for most people. Swimming in such conditions is possible, but for most people, the time spent in the water should be limited to avoid hypothermia. Even experienced swimmers may feel discomfort if they stay in the water for too long. To improve comfort and safety, a wetsuit can be used. It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. When the air temperature is below 68°F (20°C), and sometimes even below 77°F (25°C), swimming can be unpleasant even with relatively high water temperatures.

Location & Local Information
Sofia (Bulgarian: София) is close to a few freshwater bodies, the most used for recreation being Pancharevo Lake (Pancharevsko ezero) on the city’s outskirts. Water temperatures there follow a temperate continental pattern: in winter the surface typically falls to about 0–4 °C (32–39 °F), in spring it rises from roughly 6–16 °C (43–61 °F), in summer it commonly reaches 18–26 °C (64–79 °F) with the warmest weeks occasionally pushing a bit higher, and in autumn it cools back to around 10–18 °C (50–64 °F). Exact temperatures vary year to year with air temperature, rainfall and wind, and shallower bays warm faster than deeper areas.
Swimming is commonly practised in summer at Pancharevo and some other recreational spots near Sofia because these areas are intended for leisure and accessible from the city. However, swimming rules differ by site: certain reservoirs around Sofia are prohibited from bathing because they serve as drinking-water sources or for safety and boating activities, and lifeguards are not always present. Local signage and municipal guidance should be checked before entering the water.
