Water Temperature Trends
Maryland, with its diverse landscape that includes both coastal areas along the Chesapeake Bay and a variety of inland rivers and lakes, experiences a wide range of water temperatures throughout the year. Along the coastline, the water temperature is influenced by the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. In summer, the water temperature in the bay typically ranges from 70°F to 80°F (21°C to 27°C), making it comfortable for swimming, boating, and other water activities. The Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Maryland tends to be cooler, with water temperatures ranging from 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C), which is still enjoyable for beachgoers but slightly colder than the bay.
During the cooler months of fall and winter, the water temperatures in both the bay and the Atlantic Ocean gradually decrease. By October, water temperatures in the Chesapeake Bay drop to around 55°F to 65°F (13°C to 18°C), while temperatures along the Atlantic coast can fall to 50°F to 60°F (10°C to 15°C). These cooler waters still attract fishermen and those interested in boating, but swimming becomes less popular due to the colder temperatures. By winter, the waters can dip as low as 35°F to 45°F (1°C to 7°C), making activities like swimming or even boating less common due to the chill.
In Maryland's inland rivers and lakes, water temperatures are typically warmer in the summer months. Lakes such as Deep Creek Lake and the Potomac River generally see temperatures ranging from 70°F to 75°F (21°C to 24°C) during the peak of summer, which is perfect for activities like kayaking, fishing, and boating. As the weather cools in the fall, these temperatures gradually drop to around 50°F to 60°F (10°C to 15°C), and by the winter months, the water can reach temperatures between 35°F and 45°F (1°C to 7°C). These conditions are ideal for winter trout fishing but are generally too cold for recreational swimming.
