Water Temperature Trends
Oslo County, located at the head of the Oslofjord, experiences relatively mild sea temperatures compared to Norway’s western and northern coasts. During winter, from December to March, water temperatures typically range between 1°C (33.8°F) and 4°C (39.2°F). In particularly cold winters, ice can form in the inner parts of the fjord, especially in sheltered bays and harbors. However, due to the fjord’s connection to the North Sea, complete freezing is rare, and deeper waters remain ice-free year-round.
In summer, from June to August, sea temperatures in the Oslofjord rise significantly, often reaching 16°C (60.8°F) to 20°C (68°F), making it one of the warmest coastal areas in Norway for swimming. Shallow beaches and calm waters contribute to faster warming, attracting many locals and tourists to seaside spots like Huk, Bygdøy, and Hvervenbukta. The relatively warm waters make the region ideal for kayaking, sailing, and other water activities, especially during the peak of summer.
