Water Temperature Trends
Rogaland County, located on Norway’s southwestern coast, experiences moderate sea temperatures influenced by the North Sea. During winter, from December to March, water temperatures typically range between 5°C (41°F) and 7°C (44.6°F). The Gulf Stream helps prevent extreme cooling, keeping the coastal waters relatively mild compared to more northern regions of Norway. However, strong winds and rough seas are common in winter, making swimming and other water activities less favorable.
In summer, from June to August, sea temperatures rise to around 14°C (57.2°F) to 17°C (62.6°F), creating more comfortable conditions for swimming and water sports. Popular coastal spots like the beaches near Stavanger, including Solastranden and Orrestranden, attract visitors seeking to enjoy the relatively warm waters. While the sea remains cooler than in southern Europe, Rogaland’s summer climate, combined with its scenic coastline, makes it a great location for surfing, sailing, and other marine activities.
