Water Temperature Trends
Nordland County, stretching along Norway’s northern coastline, experiences cold but varied sea temperatures due to its extensive shoreline and influence from the North Atlantic Current. In winter, from December to March, the coastal waters generally range from 3°C (37.4°F) to 6°C (42.8°F), with colder spots in more northern and exposed areas. The Lofoten and Vesterålen archipelagos, while still cold, tend to have slightly milder waters due to oceanic currents. Ice formation is rare along the coast, but fjords and sheltered bays may see lower temperatures during extreme cold spells.
In summer, from June to August, sea temperatures rise but remain relatively cool, averaging between 10°C (50°F) and 14°C (57.2°F). Some shallow coastal areas and fjords, particularly in southern Nordland, can reach up to 15°C (59°F) on warm days, making them more suitable for swimming. Despite the cool waters, the region is popular for fishing, kayaking, and other marine activities, with its dramatic coastal scenery, deep fjords, and abundant marine life attracting visitors from around the world.
