The Vrbanja River, a major tributary of the Vrbas in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a mountain river known for its clear and cold waters. Due to its source on Mount Vlašić, its temperature regime is consistently low. In winter, the water is very cold, with temperatures typically ranging from 4∘C to 10∘C. Even during the warmest summer months of July and August, the temperature rarely exceeds 17∘C to 21∘C, providing a refreshing but very cool swimming experience.
Swimming in the Vrbanja is generally permitted and popular at designated local spots, particularly closer to its confluence with the Vrbas, where the water is slightly warmer and slower. While the water is of good quality, the consistent low temperature and the strong current in many parts mean caution is necessary. For instance, the Zeleni Vir location on the Vrbanja has been officially tested and deemed safe for swimming and recreation. Visitors should always use caution due to the characteristics of a fast-flowing mountain river.
