The Sana River flows through northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina, passing through towns such as Ključ, Sanski Most, and Prijedor before joining the Una River. It is one of the country’s cleanest rivers, known for its turquoise color and mountain-fed water. The temperature varies through the year: in winter, it ranges between 2 and 5°C, rising in spring to around 10–14°C. During the summer months, particularly in July and August, the Sana warms up to 20–24°C in calmer sections, making it comfortable for swimming. In autumn, it cools again to about 10–15°C.
Swimming in the Sana River is popular, especially near Sanski Most, where the water is cleaner and flow gentler. The river’s clarity and moderate temperature make it suitable for swimming, kayaking, and fishing. There are several natural swimming spots and river beaches where locals and visitors enjoy spending time in summer. While the upper parts remain cooler and faster, the lower stretches offer ideal conditions for recreation.
