The Riu Ter, rising in the eastern Pyrenees and flowing to the Mediterranean near Girona, shows clear seasonal swings in water temperature driven by snowmelt, flow volume and local weather. In winter the river is typically cold, around 4–8 °C (39–46 °F). Spring sees a progressive warming as flows moderate, roughly 6–14 °C (43–57 °F). Peak warmth occurs in summer when shallow, slow stretches and reservoirs can reach about 18–26 °C (64–79 °F), and during heatwaves some sheltered pools may climb into the upper 20s °C (80–82 °F). Autumn temperatures commonly fall back into the 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) band as rainfall and cooler air reduce river heat.
Swimming is possible in many parts of the Riu Ter, especially at designated bathing spots, reservoirs such as the Sau area and calm downstream pools, but whether it is allowed depends on local regulations and signage. Safety and water quality considerations matter: strong currents, sudden depth changes and variable turbidity after rains can make some reaches unsafe, and water quality can deteriorate near urban or agricultural sections. Always follow posted rules, seasonal advisories and local guidance; where permitted, summer is the most comfortable time for bathing because temperatures are warmest and flows are generally lower.
