The Besòs (Besós in Spanish) is a short Mediterranean river that flows into the sea near Barcelona, and its water temperature reflects the regional climate and freshwater inputs. In winter the river typically cools to roughly 8–14 °C (46–57 °F), spring sees a gradual rise to about 12–18 °C (54–64 °F), summer surface temperatures can reach approximately 18–26 °C (64–79 °F) in sheltered stretches, and autumn usually brings values around 14–20 °C (57–68 °F) as flows increase and air temperatures fall. These figures are approximate and vary with recent rainfall, upstream discharges and seasonal weather patterns; shallow, sun-exposed pools warm more quickly while deeper or faster-flowing reaches remain cooler.
Swimming in the Besòs is generally not encouraged and in many places is effectively restricted for safety and water quality reasons. Historically the river suffered from industrial and urban pollution, and although water quality has improved and riverside parks like the Parc Fluvial del Besòs offer recreational space, routine bathing is often discouraged by authorities because of variable contamination, fluctuating flows and infrastructure hazards. Organized, supervised activities such as guided canoeing or monitored events may be allowed under specific conditions, but casual swimming is usually avoided unless local signs or officials explicitly permit it.
