The Savinja River flows through central Slovenia, originating in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps and passing through valleys and towns such as Celje. Being an alpine river in its upper course, the water remains cool throughout the year. In the summer months, from June to August, surface temperatures in calmer, shallow areas usually reach 18–22°C, while in faster or deeper sections the water stays around 12–16°C. In spring and autumn, temperatures typically range from 10–14°C, and in winter they can drop to 4–6°C.
Swimming in the Savinja is possible, mainly in slower and shallower sections or in natural pools formed along the river. These areas are popular with locals and visitors seeking a refreshing dip on hot days. Caution is advised in sections with stronger currents or rocky riverbeds. Canoeing and kayaking are also popular summer activities along the river.
Outside of summer, swimming is less common due to cooler temperatures and stronger currents. The Savinja remains attractive for walking, cycling along the riverbanks, and enjoying the surrounding natural scenery. Even a short summer dip provides a refreshing break and an enjoyable way to cool off.
