Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The historic market town of Yarm is situated on a peninsula within a loop of the River Tees. Due to the influence of the nearby Tees Barrage, the river section around Yarm is non-tidal and relatively tranquil. Water temperatures fluctuate significantly with the seasons, dropping to cold winter lows of approximately 3∘C to 6∘C (37∘F to 43∘F). By contrast, the summer months, particularly in July and August, can see the calm, sun-warmed water rise to pleasant highs, sometimes reaching 18∘C to 21∘C (64∘F to 70∘F) in still areas.
Wild swimming in the River Tees is generally permitted in unprohibited sections, including near Yarm, and a local open water swimming community exists. However, authorities often advise caution due to water depth and potential pollutants. Swimming is specifically restricted near the Tees Barrage itself due to the operation of the gates and high-adrenaline watersports in that area. Visitors to Yarm can enjoy the charming, cobbled High Street, known for its boutiques and restaurants, and explore nearby attractions such as Preston Park Museum and Grounds or the scenic North York Moors National Park.
