*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The Afon Lwyd, a river flowing through the Eastern Valleys of South Wales, maintains characteristically cold water temperatures typical of inland British rivers. Seasonal fluctuations mean that in the deepest parts of winter, from December to February, the water temperature is often chillingly low, usually ranging from 4∘C to 7∘C (39∘F to 45∘F). During the warmer summer months, its temperature rarely exceeds a cool 16∘C to 18∘C (61∘F to 64∘F), making it a significant risk for cold water shock even in July.
Swimming in the Afon Lwyd is generally not recommended or officially permitted due to various dangers. The river is prone to flash flooding, particularly after heavy rainfall, turning quickly into a fast-flowing torrent. Hazards also include sudden depth changes, submerged objects, and potential water quality issues from urban runoff. Instead of swimming, the river is best appreciated alongside the Afon Lwyd Trail, a picturesque, traffic-free route perfect for walking and cycling. Nearby attractions include the Blaenavon World Heritage Site and the industrial history of the Big Pit National Coal Museum.
