The River Avon near Bristol flows through a broad, winding valley before meeting the Severn Estuary, carrying a mix of freshwater and tidal influence. Its temperature reflects the mild but variable climate of southwest England, with gradual seasonal changes. During winter, the water usually ranges between 4 and 6°C (39–43°F), staying cool and often fast-moving after rainfall. By spring, it rises to about 9–12°C (48–54°F), while in midsummer—especially in July and August—the Avon can reach 17–20°C (63–68°F) in calm, sheltered sections. As autumn arrives, temperatures slowly fall back to around 12–14°C (54–57°F), maintaining a refreshing feel through much of the year.
Swimming in the River Avon near Bristol is possible but should be approached with care. The lower stretches are tidal, and the current can change quickly, making it suitable only for experienced wild swimmers who understand the conditions. In calmer upstream areas, such as near Saltford or Keynsham, the water is clearer and safer for summer swimming. Many residents enjoy kayaking or paddleboarding along the river’s scenic banks instead. The Avon Gorge, with its dramatic cliffs and views of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, adds a striking backdrop to the river, while nearby trails and parks offer further opportunities for recreation and relaxation.
