** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The River Exe, one of Devon’s major waterways, flows from Exmoor National Park through Tiverton and Exeter before reaching the English Channel at Exmouth. Its temperature reflects the mild maritime climate of southwest England, with steady seasonal variation and relatively warm conditions compared to most British rivers. In winter, the Exe typically remains between 5 and 7°C (41–45°F), staying cold but rarely freezing. By spring, it gradually warms to about 9–12°C (48–54°F). During midsummer—especially in July and August—the water can reach 16–19°C (61–66°F) in calm stretches, particularly near Exeter and the estuary. As autumn approaches, the river cools again to around 11–13°C (52–55°F), maintaining a pleasant, fresh feel through much of the year.
Swimming in the River Exe is allowed and increasingly popular, especially in the cleaner upper sections and near Exeter Quay. The current is usually moderate, but swimmers should take care after rainfall or near the tidal lower reaches. The Exe Estuary itself offers opportunities for paddleboarding and open-water swimming in sheltered areas with good visibility. The surrounding region is rich in natural and cultural attractions, including the Exe Estuary Trail, Exmoor National Park, and the beaches of Exmouth, making the river a scenic and versatile destination for outdoor recreation.
