*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Cwmbran lies in the valley of the Afon Lwyd, a small river that flows south from the hills near Blaenavon toward the River Usk. The river’s water temperature stays cool year-round, influenced by rainfall and the shaded, upland terrain through which it runs. In winter, temperatures often fall to around 3–5 °C (37–41 °F), rising gradually to 8–10 °C (46–50 °F) in spring. During summer, the Afon Lwyd can reach 14–16 °C (57–61 °F) in slower or shallower sections, though shaded stretches remain brisk. By autumn, the water cools again to near 9–11 °C (48–52 °F), reflecting the mild but variable Welsh climate. These steady, cool conditions make the river fresh and clear but rarely warm.
Swimming in the Afon Lwyd is possible but not common, as the river is narrow and often shallow near Cwmbran. Wild swimmers occasionally visit deeper pools in quieter stretches upstream, but care is needed due to slippery rocks and fluctuating flow after rainfall. Wetsuits are recommended outside midsummer for comfort. The area around the river offers pleasant walking routes and picnic spots. Nearby attractions include the scenic Llandegfedd Reservoir, the industrial heritage sites of Blaenavon, and the rolling countryside of the Usk Valley, all popular with outdoor enthusiasts.
