*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The Vartry Reservoir, located in the Wicklow Mountains near the village of Roundwood, is a man-made water body comprised of an upper and lower lake, built to supply drinking water to parts of Dublin and Wicklow. As is typical for deep, operational reservoirs in Ireland, the water temperature remains quite cold throughout the year due to limited flow and depth. While precise figures are not consistently published, the water is generally estimated to be a chilling 5∘C to 10∘C (41∘F to 50∘F) in the winter months, slowly warming to an average of only 12∘C to 16∘C (54∘F to 61∘F) at the surface in the peak of summer.
Swimming is strictly prohibited in the Vartry Reservoir. This is because the reservoir is an essential source of public drinking water, and the water utility operator maintains a ban on swimming to prevent contamination and safeguard public health. Furthermore, reservoirs present extreme and hidden dangers, including sudden drops in depth, strong underwater currents from the draw-off pipes, and the inherent risk of cold water shock even on warm days. Instead of swimming, visitors can enjoy the extensive network of scenic walking and hiking trails around the reservoir, or explore nearby attractions such as the historic monastic site of Glendalough and the dramatic Sally Gap Drive in the surrounding Wicklow Mountains National Park.
