*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Muckno Lake, also known as Lough Muckno, lies beside the town of Castleblayney in County Monaghan and is the largest lake in the county. It is a deep, clear freshwater lake that reflects the mild, changeable climate of Ireland’s northeast. In winter, water temperatures typically range from 4–6°C (39–43°F), remaining quite cold and steady due to the lake’s depth. During the summer months, surface temperatures generally rise to around 15–18°C (59–64°F), and in calm, sunny conditions, sheltered bays may reach about 19°C (66°F). The warmest and most comfortable period for swimming is between late June and early September, when both air and water temperatures reach their seasonal peak.
Swimming is allowed in Muckno Lake, and the area around Lough Muckno Leisure Park provides safe and convenient access for swimmers. The lake’s clean water, gentle slopes, and scenic setting make it a pleasant location for open-water swimming and short dips during warmer months. Wetsuits are often recommended outside mid-summer, as the temperature drops quickly below the surface. Beyond swimming, Muckno Lake is well known for angling, boating, and nature walks. Nearby Castleblayney offers restaurants, parks, and cultural events, while the surrounding drumlin landscape provides peaceful countryside views and outdoor recreation opportunities.
