** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Thompson Lake in Maine experiences the typical seasonal temperature shifts of a temperate, freshwater lake. In summer the surface often warms into the mid-60s to mid-70s °F (about 18–24 °C), with the warmest days occasionally pushing temperatures a few degrees higher in shallow, sheltered bays. Late spring and early fall see much cooler conditions, commonly ranging from the mid-40s to low 60s °F (7–16 °C) as the lake transitions between seasons. In winter the surface approaches freezing, around 32 °F (0 °C), and the lake commonly develops ice cover. Deeper water layers remain colder year-round and a thermocline can form in the warm months, so temperatures vary with depth and location.
Swimming at Thompson Lake is generally allowed and is a normal recreational activity where public access points or private beaches exist. The reason it is permitted is simply because it is a freshwater recreational lake used for boating, fishing and bathing; however, conditions dictate whether it is advisable at a given time. Cold spring or autumn waters and the risk of cold shock make swimming uncomfortable or unsafe outside peak summer months, and occasional water-quality advisories (algal blooms, for example) may temporarily restrict swimming. Users should choose designated swim areas when available and follow local safety guidance.
