Lake Auburn in Maine is a relatively deep, cold-water reservoir, so its surface temperatures vary substantially through the year. In winter the lake commonly sits at or just above freezing, around 32°F (0°C) under ice. During spring and early summer the surface warms into the mid-30s to mid-50s °F (roughly 2–13°C) as stratification begins. Peak summer surface temperatures typically reach about 60–75°F (16–24°C) on warm days, though deeper water remains much colder year-round. In autumn surface temperatures fall back through the 45–60°F range (7–16°C) before cooling to winter conditions. Because of its depth and clarity, Lake Auburn often maintains a cool hypolimnion even when the surface is comfortable for brief swimming.
Swimming in Lake Auburn is generally not permitted because the lake serves as a municipal drinking water supply for the Lewiston–Auburn area. Restrictions on direct-contact recreation such as swimming are intended to minimize the risk of contamination from human activity, protect water quality, and preserve public health.
