** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Moomaw, a deep reservoir in western Virginia, shows pronounced seasonal temperature changes because of its size and depth. In winter the surface commonly cools to about 32–40°F (0–4°C), often producing very cold conditions just below the surface. Spring brings a steady rise, with surface readings generally in the 50–65°F (10–18°C) range as the water mixes and warms. By summer, shallow areas and the surface typically reach about 70–80°F (21–27°C), though cooler pockets remain in deeper sections because of thermal stratification. In autumn the surface gradually falls again, commonly sitting between 50–70°F (10–21°C) before winter turnover lowers temperatures further.
Swimming is possible at Lake Moomaw and is a popular activity, but it is subject to local rules and safety considerations rather than broad supervised beach operations. Many shoreline areas are open to swimmers, but there are often no lifeguards and some zones near the dam, boat lanes, or private property may be posted as restricted. Cold-water shock and sudden depth changes, submerged timber, and boat traffic make caution important; water that feels comfortable at the surface can be much colder a few feet down. Visitors should follow posted signs, use flotation where appropriate, and be aware that seasonal temperature swings affect both comfort and safety.
