Squam Lake’s surface temperatures vary widely through the year. In spring (April–May) water commonly ranges from about 40–60°F (4–16°C) as the lake thaws and stratification begins. Peak summer warmth in June through August typically brings surface readings around 60–75°F (15–24°C), with the warmest spots in shallow bays and sun-exposed coves. By September and into October the surface cools again to roughly 50–65°F (10–18°C). In winter the lake often nears freezing at the surface, around 32–40°F (0–4°C), and portions may ice over; deeper water remains colder than summer surface temperatures year-round.
Swimming is commonly done in summer when surface temperatures are most comfortable, and public beaches and private shorelines accommodate recreational swimmers. Swimming is allowed, but conditions vary: water clarity is generally good and the lake is popular for bathing, yet boat traffic, changing weather and cooler deep water can pose hazards. Cold-water shock and hypothermia are real risks outside the warmest months, and ice swimming is unsafe without proper precautions. Visitors should use designated swimming areas when available and exercise typical lake-safety practices.
