Newfound Lake is a relatively deep, clear lake in central New Hampshire, so its surface temperatures change noticeably through the year and can stay cooler than shallower lakes. In spring (April–May) the water commonly ranges from roughly 40–55°F (4–13°C) as ice melts and the lake stratifies. By early summer (June) temperatures often rise into the mid‑50s to mid‑60s°F (13–18°C). Peak summer (July–August) surface readings typically reach the upper 60s to mid‑70s°F (20–24°C), and on warm, calm days can approach the mid‑70s to around 78°F (24–26°C). In September and into early fall temperatures decline back through the 60s°F (15–20°C), and in winter the lake is near freezing and often iced over (around 32°F / 0°C).
Swimming is permitted and commonly enjoyed at public beaches and private shores around Newfound Lake—there are designated access points that support recreational use—largely because the lake’s water quality and clarity are good. However, swimmers should be aware that the lake’s depth and cold thermocline can make deeper water chillier than surface readings suggest, so hypothermia risk and sudden temperature changes are factors in early and late season. Ice covers in winter make open‑water swimming unsafe except for supervised, specially arranged events.
