Great East Lake’s surface temperatures follow the typical seasonal pattern for lakes in southern Maine. In spring the water is cold, often ranging from the low 40s to the mid‑50s °F (about 4–13 °C) as the lake comes out of ice cover. By summer, surface temperatures commonly rise into the mid‑60s to mid‑70s °F (18–24 °C) and on hot, calm days can approach the upper 70s or low 80s °F (25–27 °C). In early fall the lake cools back through the 60s to the 50s °F (15–10 °C) and by late fall and winter the surface is near freezing, around 32 °F (0 °C), with ice formation that keeps open water temperatures at or below the mid‑30s °F (1–3 °C) where ice remains.
Swimming in Great East Lake is generally possible and commonly undertaken during the warm months where shoreline or beach access exists, because summer surface temperatures become comfortable for recreational use. In contrast, winter swimming is not advisable and often not feasible because of ice cover, near‑freezing water and the risk of cold‑water shock and hypothermia. Local access rules, posted advisories and water‑quality notices should be observed, and swimmers should consider factors such as wind, weather and the presence or absence of lifeguards or designated swimming areas before entering the water.
