** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
#Cumbria
Simpson Ground Reservoir sits in the Central Lake District and, being an upland impoundment, its water stays cool year‑round. Typical surface temperatures in summer range from about 10–16 °C (50–61 °F), while spring and autumn are usually around 6–12 °C (43–54 °F). In winter the water commonly falls to roughly 4–7 °C (39–45 °F), although local weather and depth will affect exact figures. Because temperatures are low even in summer, prolonged immersion carries a real risk of cold‑water shock and rapid loss of body heat.
Swimming at Simpson Ground is not actively promoted by landowners and is generally considered unofficial. As a working reservoir it has infrastructure, intake zones and water quality considerations, and many such sites discourage bathing for safety and supply reasons. Some experienced wild swimmers do enter upland reservoirs, but anyone considering it should heed local signage, check with the landowner or water authority, and be aware of hidden hazards. The area is popular for walking and sightseeing, with nearby Grasmere, Rydal Water and Loughrigg Fell offering alternative outdoor activities if you prefer not to swim.
