** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Bucks Lake, a high-elevation reservoir in the northern Sierra Nevada, typically stays much cooler than lowland bodies of water. Seasonal surface temperatures in summer generally range from about 60–70°F (15–21°C) on warm afternoons, though the water can be cooler near inlets and in shaded coves. In spring the lake is commonly 40–55°F (4–13°C) as snowmelt continues to feed it, and by autumn surface readings fall to roughly 45–60°F (7–16°C) as air temperatures drop. In winter the lake often approaches freezing along the surface and in shallower bays, roughly 32–40°F (0–4°C), and parts may ice over depending on the year. Deeper water remains colder year-round, so overall temperatures can be significantly lower than surface measurements suggest.
Swimming is allowed as a recreational activity at Bucks Lake during the warmer months when ice has cleared, and visitors frequently swim from beaches and boat launches. There are typically no lifeguards and shorelines can have steep drop-offs, so caution is advised. Cold water presents a real risk of cold shock and hypothermia even on warm days, and sudden temperature changes between surface and depth can surprise swimmers. For safety, limit time in the water, wear a wetsuit in cooler conditions, and never swim alone.
