Location & Local Information
Lake of the Promised Land, in northeastern Pennsylvania, follows the typical seasonal pattern of small, forested reservoirs. Surface water temperatures in winter often hover at or just above freezing, roughly 32–40°F (0–4°C) when open water remains; spring brings a steady rise into the 40–60°F range (4–16°C) as the lake mixes and warms. In summer the measured surface tends to reach the warmest values, commonly 70–80°F (21–27°C) on average and occasionally into the low 80s°F (27–28°C) during heat waves, while deeper water stays markedly cooler. Autumn cooling returns surface temperatures to roughly 50–65°F (10–18°C) before winter ice formation.
Swimming is allowed seasonally at the state park’s designated beach area, where recreation is managed for public safety and water-quality considerations. The beach is typically staffed or monitored during the main summer season and is intended for surface swimming in the warmer months; outside the supervised zone and in deeper or colder parts of the lake, swimming is discouraged because colder, stratified water and underwater hazards can increase risk. Visitors should expect comfortable summer surface swimming but chilly conditions in early spring, late fall, or in submerged depths.
